FAQ's

What do I need for class?
Please bring a yoga mat for streching (some stretches are done on the floor) and a bottle of water.
What do I wear?
Please wear comfortable form fitting clothing ie yoga pants and a tank top. I need to see what you are doing. Please do not wear jeans.
Do I have to wear a costume for class?
No. In a class setting it actually works better that you are not in a costume. In some instances they can be restrictive when learning.
Do I have to show my belly?
No you do not, some professional dancers even cover their bellies.
Do I need to be young/thin to belly dance?
No you do not. Belly dancers come in a variety shapes, sizes and ages. There are some movements that may be difficult due to some health issues though. Please be sure to tell the instructor if you have a medical condition that may hinder movements.
What if I am too shy?
Keep in mind that at the introduction/beginner levels everyone is in the same boat. They will all be focused on learning just as you will be. If a group setting is uncomfortable you can always take private lessons.
I want to perform how long will it take?
That depends on you. Everyone learns differently and at different speeds. Some things may come more naturally to others. You have to keep practicing.
Is this really good exercise?
Yes! It is a fantastic form of exercise. It helps with posture, muscle definition, toning and stamina. It also helps you become more comfortable with your body which helps with confidence and grace. Not all of the moves are easy. There will be some moves that will be difficult simply because you have never moved your body that way.
Isn't Belly Dancing Stripping?
No! Belly Dancers keep their clothes on. Traditionally Belly dance was performed for other women and did not develop as a means for male entertainment.
Can Men Belly dance?
Yes, they can. Traditionally a good majority of the movements were utilized by men, women and children. They may not have all danced together, but they danced. There are a number of fantastic male belly dancers both past and present.
Are there different styles of Belly Dance?
Yes. There are so many styles, genres and sub-genres now that it is hard to list them all. A brief list would be Egyptian Cabaret, Turkish Cabaret, Lebanese Cabaret, American Cabaret, American Tribal Style (ATS), Improvisational Tribal Style (ITS), Tribal Fusion, Gothic and just plain Fusion. Don't forget all of the folkloric dances as well.
